Week 1: July 4 – 7 (4 days) DINNER WITH THE ANTS

Strength in numbers is an ant’s motto. Ants cannot live alone. This week, AcadeCampers will observe live ants to explore the complex societies of massive ant colonies. Campers will build tunnels and role-play ant social structures and behaviours such as feeding, following scent trails, and guarding the nests. Throughout the week’s iSTEAM and obstacle challenges, campers will learn the value of teamwork. Come work, work, work, senora!

Week 2: July 10 – 14 BEAUTIFUL BEETLES

This camp session takes advantage of childhood delight and fascination with ladybirds, and will explore the beautiful world of beetles. In a series of hands-on and role-play activities, campers learn about various beetles’ body structure, life cycle, defensive behaviour, and favourite foods. Campers will practice and absorb math and science concepts such as animal form and ecology, counting, symmetry, and Fibonacci patterns as they indulge their curiosity about these charming insects. Delve into nature’s patterns!

Week 3: July 17 – 21 UNDERGROUND ARCHITECTURE

What lives underground, under our feet? Underground architecture is a week which will explore the various critters which call the soil their home, while developing mathematical and scientific concepts and abilities. By participating in a variety of hands-on activities, the campers will learn what makes underground a good habitat; how the insects and bugs survive in different soils, and their life cycles; and the importance of the different critters. Let’s get digging!

Week 4: July 24 – 28 CACOPHONY OF CREEPY CRAWLERS

Open your minds and ears to the music of insects! This week, campers will learn how insects make sounds. Why do they make these sounds? Are there secret messages? Insects have inspired composers for hundreds of years. Campers will become composers and create their own symphony using the instruments they made. Unearth your musical talent!

Week 5: July 31 – August 4 A POOL OF INSECTS

Dive into the world of waterbugs! In a series of iSTEAM activities, AcadeCampers will experience the significant environmental role of insects and bugs. In accordance, they will learn about aquatic ecosystems and food webs, and how waterbugs are excellent bio-indicators and protectors of healthy water systems. Come take the plunge!

Week 6: August 8 – 11 (4 days) WINGED WONDERS

Come fly away… This week, campers will look to the sky and examine the world of the winged. They will explore the physics and biology of wings. In addition, they will explore the environmental significance of flying insects and bugs in pollination. Come fly away with us!

Week 7: August 14 – 18 INSECT iSTEAM

Honey… I shrunk the kids! Shrink down and see the world from the insects’ and bugs’ perspective. Campers will create some cool glasses and explore a bug’s eye view of iSTEAM. They will learn about different biological relationships (symbiotic, parasitic, mutualism, competition, commensalism), and what products they create that humans use (i.e. honey, silk). Pollen love with insects!
