MinecraftEDU: Turtle Code

Welcome to the first week of the AcadeCoders session: Minecraft Turtle Code. This blog post will cover each daily activity of each camp day with various pictures and descriptions


Day 1: Monday, June 27th, 2016

We began the day with morning ice-breakers for the campers and instructors to get to know each other better. After these various ice-breakers, the AcadeCoders transitioned to their jiu-jitsu session with Daniella of K2 Martial Arts.

Following jiu-jitsu, the AcadeCoders took to the classroom to being their MinecraftEDU turtle coding. Each camper is given a turtle block in MinecraftEDU are taught to use several turtle commands to navigate through each session’s challenges.

After lunch, the AcadeCoders took to Morrison Park for outdoor activities. While MinecraftEDU and coding are central to the AcadeCoders, so is daily exercise and play. The AcadeCoders had a great time playing on the structure, creating their own games, and socializing.

In the afternoon, the AcadeCoders are always challenged by taking what they have been taught in the morning and apply it to mission-based challenges. These challenges allow for students to use their turtle code commands with the excitement of survival base scenarios.

Day 2: Tuesday, June 28th, 2016

Second day of MinecraftEDU: Turtle Code. The AcadeCoders began their morning with the continuation of the afternoon challenge on day 1. This allowed for the students to not only complete all of their mission challenges but to refresh and reflect on the turtle commands they have used thus far. It’s important for the students to feel comfortable with the basic turtle codes and commands before they continue with more complex functions.

Following the mission-based challenges and lunch, the AcadeCoders took to Morrison Park for some fun in the sun. The AcadeCoders participated in various outdoor activities on the playground while creating their own games and socializing amongst each other.

Their afternoon challenge was to take the new turtle code commands that they have been taught to use and build individual shops. The more variety their code was the more items they were given to expands their shops. To make things interesting, we placed giant spiders in their world and the AcadeCoders had to fend them off as a team while protecting their shops.

Day 3: Wednesday, June 29th, 2016

Third day of MinecraftEDU: Turtle Code. The AcadeCoders began their morning with a new challenge and new turtle code methods and functions within MinecraftEDU. The AcadeCoders had to build a Viking world with their own pieces of land. Each AcadeCoder had to use the functions to build their own manor, shop, build items, and build a moving ship.

After the AcadeCoders completed their morning challenge and lunch, they made their way to Morrison Park for outdoor activities. Apart from the outdoor activities, the AcadeCoders like exploring their surroundings and the nature around them in the park

Following their outdoor activities and exploring, the AcadeCoders were ready for their survival based mission assignment. The AcadeCoders were split into two Viking armies and battled out using turtle code from the battle commands, building weapons, and protecting their land.

Day 4: Thursday, June 30th, 2016

Fourth day of MinecraftEDU: Turtle Code. The AcadeCoders began their morning with the continuation of the Viking challenge in the battle of the two teams. The AcadeCoders get to play on server types and worlds on the last day and they decided to continue with the Viking world for the morning.

After the morning Viking challenge, the AcadeCoders took to Morrison Park for a fun day in the sun. The AcadeCoders had free time to decide on what activities they wanted to part take in and it was great to see how well they can organize themselves and assuring everyone is participating.

Following outdoor activities, the AcadeCoders decided they wanted a different challenge and asked for a new world and server! The AcadeCoders were given the Hunger Games World where the students are divided into different districts and use turtle code to defend their district while in battle with other district members. They face different challenges with the weather changing, monsters, and more.

Day 5: Friday, July 1st, 2016

No Camp today. We wish all AcadeCoders and parents a happy Canada day!
