Day 1: Monday, June 27th, 2016
We began the day with morning ice-breakers for the campers and instructors to get to know each other better. After these various ice-breakers, the AcadeCoders transitioned to their jiu-jitsu session with Daniella of K2 Martial Arts.
Following jiu-jitsu, the AcadeCoders took to the classroom to being their MinecraftEDU turtle coding. Each camper is given a turtle block in MinecraftEDU are taught to use several turtle commands to navigate through each session’s challenges.
After lunch, the AcadeCoders took to Morrison Park for outdoor activities. While MinecraftEDU and coding are central to the AcadeCoders, so is daily exercise and play. The AcadeCoders had a great time playing on the structure, creating their own games, and socializing.
In the afternoon, the AcadeCoders are always challenged by taking what they have been taught in the morning and apply it to mission-based challenges. These challenges allow for students to use their turtle code commands with the excitement of survival base scenarios.
Day 2: Tuesday, June 28th, 2016
Second day of MinecraftEDU: Turtle Code. The AcadeCoders began their morning with the continuation of the afternoon challenge on day 1. This allowed for the students to not only complete all of their mission challenges but to refresh and reflect on the turtle commands they have used thus far. It’s important for the students to feel comfortable with the basic turtle codes and commands before they continue with more complex functions.
Following the mission-based challenges and lunch, the AcadeCoders took to Morrison Park for some fun in the sun. The AcadeCoders participated in various outdoor activities on the playground while creating their own games and socializing amongst each other.
Following outdoor activities, the AcadeCoders were back to turtle coding on MineCraftEDU. Their afternoon challenge was to take the new turtle code commands that they have been taught to use and build individual shops. The more variety their code was the more items they were given to expands their shops. To make things interesting, we placed giant spiders in their world and the AcadeCoders had to fend them off as a team while protecting their shops.
