iSTEAM Fair – Our Experiment

“What happens to my plant in the terrarium? Will my plant’s habitat let it survive and be a good growing plant? I think that flowers need light to survive and I will see water slide down the jar like it is rain.” A.F.

As explained by one of our Senior Kindergarten students, the Kindergarten and Grade 1 iSTEAM Fair project is about a plant’s habitat. Students posed questions and developing a hypothesis, then they made their own terrarium. As the weeks go by, the students are observing the changes in their terrarium; they are watching the water cycle being demonstrated within their terrarium and watching to find out if their hypothesis was correct.

My name is Shannon Neill and I am currently the Grade 1/2 teacher at AcadeCap. I began my teaching career in 2017 after graduating from McGill University with a Bachelor’s of Education, specialized in French Immersion Pedagogy. Since my first year of teaching, I have been working with Grade 1 and 2 students, from Montreal, to Winnipeg, and now Ottawa, where I have been with AcadeCap since 2018. Working with students in Grade 1 and 2 is definitely something special. The students are curious, honest and so willing to learn and share - I consider myself pretty lucky to be able to learn from my students every day!
