AcadeCap is hosting an iSTEAM Fair on November 27th from 9:30 to 12:30. Parents are invited to visit in the morning during the presentations, projects will remain displayed until the end of the day. The fair is an event where students create a project based on research, experiments, and innovation. Their entire project will be displayed for students, parents, and judges to visit and explore.

Students have been exploring a unit through a science lens in their homeroom and specialist classes. The iSTEAM fair projects will be based on the current unit to incorporate and demonstrate knowledge, as well as to deepen students understanding of the topic.

Students will work in small groups during school time to work on the iSTEAM projects. Depending on the project, students may be required to bring in items from home.

An iSTEAM project is either:
  • An investigative project using the scientific method (classic science fair)
  • A research project or report
  • A demonstration project recreating an experiment live to demonstrate a concept
  • A model also demonstrating a concept
  • An innovation developed to solve or improve an existing problem (new STEM style project)
  • A collection which is a good entry level project for very young students

The objective of this project is to have students approach a problem scientifically. This will include:

  1. Asking questions and forming hypotheses
  2. Planning and creating experiments to test the hypotheses
  3. Organizing data and drawing conclusions
  4. Writing about scientific research

When deciding on a question to guide the project, it is important to remember:

  • The question should be interesting enough for the student to want to work on.
  • There should already be written information on the subject.
  • The experiment should contain one variable that they can change and at least one variable that they can measure numerically.
  • They can change only one variable at a time and keep all other conditions the same.

Judges and teachers will be evaluating students on 4 categories:
  1. Scientific Method
  2. Scientific Knowledge
  3. Presentation
  4. Creativity
