Athletics
The Académie de la Capitale programme of physical education involves the study of physical activity and appropriate lifestyle choices.
Students begin early on to acquire basic knowledge about a wide variety of health related topics and to develop relevant skills. Students will:
- discover the capabilities of their bodies and the variety of ways in which they are able to use their bodies to solve problems, address physical challenges, function as part of a group, manipulate equipment or apparatus, and express themselves kinesthetically in a range of situations.
- develop an understanding of the importance of physical fitness, health and well-being.
- develop a personal commitment to daily vigorous physical activity.
- develop the basic motor skills required to participate in a wide variety of sports and physical activities throughout their life.
- develop skills that they may apply in a variety of contexts within and beyond the school setting. These skills include the use of proper safety precautions when engaging in physical activity, recognition of the importance of fair play, use of co-operative behaviors and the ability to functions as part of a group or a team.
Académie de la Capitale offers a wide range of compulsory physical activities in their Primary Years Programme (PYP). Age appropriate units of instruction include:
- Fitness training
- Individual and team sports including, touch football, ultimate Frisbee, baseball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, floor hockey, hockey, badminton, tennis
- Gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics
- Martial arts (Jiu-jitsu instructed by a Sensei Master)
- Outdoor education such as Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, downhill skiing/snow boarding
- Track and field
- Co-operative games
- Individual events such as skating, golf, swimming
