French and English

Académie de la Capitale is the only school in Ottawa, offering the PYP in a French/bilingual setting. With the guidance of teachers specialising in 2nd language development, our students quickly become proficient in French. Unlike French immersion programmes in public schools, we offer an entry point at all grade levels from Pre-K to Grade 7. The core curriculum is taught in French, totaling up to 80% of the instructional time. There are five 45-minute periods of English weekly, and all the specialists’ courses such as IT, Math Enrichment, Visual and Performing Arts, and PE are taught in English. Furthermore, with a daily scheduled homework period at the end of the day, parents do not carry the burden of the French homework.

Third Language

In keeping with the IB approach to internationalism, our students become even more culturally aware and respectful by being exposed to many languages. Acadecap students have the opportunity to learn a third language such as Spanish or Mandarin.

Two forty-five minute periods a week allow students to develop listening and speaking skills in the chosen language.

Furthermore, our multilingual staff ensures that students, new to Canada or to a bilingual environment, are reassured and comforted by the fact that someone understands them, until they learn to communicate in French and/or in English.
