Unit of inquiry #1 – nos héros.

This week, we began our first unit of inquiry – how choices of heroes reflect the characteristics that societies and individuals value (see “units of inquiry” tab). As you can see from our photos, we got off to a busy start. Students were not told what the unit of inquiry was, but based on photos and videoclips shown to them with different types of people who would be considered heroes, they were able to brainstorm their ideas and guess the unit. Some of the many things we did this week:
-students wrote down questions they have about heroes and placed their questions under the appropriate IB key concepts;
-students had a discussion about how heroes are not only superheroes, but regular everyday people as well, and that everyone has different heroes, and different criteria for choosing a hero;
-students worked in pairs to complete a Venn diagram comparing everyday heroes and famous heroes;
-students read an article about Terry Fox, answering important questions about why he is considered a hero today, and why we keep his legacy going to this day (very fitting that our Terry Fox run is coming up soon);
-students coloured a cartoon hero, gave him or her a name, and wrote sentences describing the hero;
-students were given a homework task to ask their parent(s) (en français, of course), who their hero is, and find out two reasons why.
