Body and Mind
Well-Balanced Personal, Social and Physical Education (PSPE) is an integral part of our curriculum
Younger students, tweens and teens participate in activities that support self-knowledge and self-understanding; discover the capabilities of their bodies and the variety of ways in which they are able to use their bodies to solve problems, address physical challenges, function as part of a group, manipulate equipment or apparatus, and express themselves kinaesthetically in a range of situations.
Body and Mind
Personal, Social, and Physical Education (PSPE)
The IB PYP PSPE course helps children maintain a healthy and social lifestyle, with lots of teaching about relationships and how we interact with the rest of society. This is related to children's attitudes to school and learning, so it's key that good relationships and healthy social lifestyles are encouraged.
In the IB Primary Years Programme, students participate in a wide range of physical activities that are connected to their Units of Inquiry. The Physical and Health Education (P. H. E.) component of the PSPE is designed to foster a healthy, active lifestyle for all learners. Through both indoor and outdoor experiences, students are given meaningful opportunities for movement, exploration, and physical challenge.
Students are introduced to fundamental concepts of health and nutrition and are encouraged to apply this knowledge to make positive, balanced choices in their daily lives. The programme supports the development of physical literacy while also building essential life skills such as cooperation, resilience, fair play, and empathy.
Physical challenges and across-the-ages team-based activities provide students with opportunities to develop patience, collaboration, determination, and perseverance. Our approach emphasizes the connection between physical and mental well-being, helping students grow into confident, balanced individuals who value a healthy active lifestyle.
PSSP and OSSD
Our Physical & Health Education programme for PSSP and OSSD students moves beyond traditional game-focused gym classes, emphasizing proper form, functional fitness, and lifelong healthy habits. Through dynamic activities like fitness conditioning, yoga-inspired training, Jiu-Jitsu, and sports such as basketball, soccer, and ultimate frisbee, students build strength, coordination, and physical literacy. Integrated nutrition education, centered on whole, nutrient-dense foods, empowers students to fuel their bodies for active, healthy lives and personal growth.
Additional extracurricular and outings can include cross-country skiing, hiking, downhill skiing/snowboarding, track and field, running, and biking, making the most of nearby natural spaces for dynamic movement and strength-building exercises.
Outdoor Learning & Environmental Stewardship
Whether climbing a tree at recess or engaging in hands-on outdoor activities, our students develop a deep respect for the natural world. Daily experiences in nature help them build empathy for living things, increase awareness of their local environment, and understand their role in protecting it. These meaningful encounters nurture responsible, active community members who make thoughtful choices to preserve and sustain the world around them.
Our treed green-space serves as a living classroom where imagination takes the lead. In this natural setting, students are invited into unstructured, creative play—building lean-to shelters with fallen branches, engineering winding waterways when the ground is wet, and confidently exploring low-hanging tree limbs with curiosity and joy.
Intentionally free of traditional playground structures, this space encourages students to think beyond conventional boundaries. Without preset equipment, they are free to collaborate, problem-solve, and invent their own adventures. Every stick becomes a tool, every puddle a project, and every tree a new perspective. Here, nature fuels innovation—and play becomes a powerful pathway to deeper learning.
Jiu Jitsu
Our Jiu-Jitsu classes offer students, from Kindergarten to Grade 8, a dynamic opportunity to build physical strength, coordination, and agility, while also fostering focus, discipline, and emotional regulation. Rooted in the principles of respect, resilience, and self-control, Jiu-Jitsu teaches students to work cooperatively, think strategically, and persevere through challenges. It promotes social-emotional development by encouraging empathy, humility, and responsible peer interaction. As a grappling-based martial art, Jiu-Jitsu empowers students to understand and set personal boundaries, manage conflict nonviolently, and build confidence in a safe and supportive environment. Fully aligned with our IB PYP PSPE and Healthy Active Living course goals, Jiu-Jitsu reinforces essential life skills such as leadership, cooperation, and self-awareness. It not only strengthens the body, but also nurtures the mind and character, helping students grow into confident, caring, and balanced individuals.
