Live Online Option

Learning From Home

BROADCASTING LIVE IN-PERSON CLASSES DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR

Should parents wish their child to learn remotely, from home or abroad, the option to access the class in real time via Google Classroom and Meet is available to students from Grade 2 to Grade 12. AcadeCap has offered this approach to learning remotely since the early 2000s using Apple computer applications, even before Skype was popular.

The Live Online option enables students to join the class remotely via a live broadcast, while the class is being conducted onsite. Parents/Guardians would need to indicate choosing this option. There will be a separate registration form for Live Online, and there will be an additional fee of $500 per semester to cover additional one-to-one time with the teacher. Spaces are capped.

The Live Online Option is also available, at no additional charge, to students enrolled into in-person learning in the event of illness and short travel periods. In the event of illness, the Live Online Option starts 24 hours after the school is advised of the absence. For short travel periods, at least 3 weeks advance notice is required to allow teachers to plan and gather the learning materials. Not all classes will be available for Live Online students who are ill and/or away. Some teacher presentations, activities and assignments may be asynchronous.

The online students will need to actively participate in the live broadcast of the class/lecture/activity in the same manner he or she would be onsite. Teachers will address and teach to both the onsite and online students as one group. Staff will be assigned to the classroom to guide and to support the students online.

Parents/guardians who choose this online option for their young child must be ready to attend and to support their child online. Students who choose this option are not counted as part of the onsite number of students and unless restrictions change, would not be able to join onsite.

Should schools be mandated to close by the provincial government, as with the later part of the 2019–2020 school year, we will be switching all learning to Telelearning only, which has an approach geared specifically towards remote learning. As Live Online registered students will be transitioned to Telelearning, the additional fee for the affected semesters will not be charged.

Assessments, learning activities, and resources will be provided and submitted using Google Classroom.

Parent and Student Commitment

Parents of the younger students, in Grade 2 to 3, for example, will have to ensure their child is online, joining the onsite classmates, and following the blended daily schedule of synchronous and asynchronous learning. Students from Grade 2 to 3 will not attend every live broadcasted period. Teachers will work out a schedule with each online child on which classes to attend and learn synchronously. Homeroom teachers will also meet individually with the student 2-3 times a week to support learning from a distance. The homeroom teacher will create multiple learning activities each week using Google Classroom to follow along with the learning happening onsite, and these activities are to be completed asynchronously.

Assessments, learning activities, and resources will be provided and submitted using Google Classroom for Grades 2-12. All families learning onsite or online will have access to the classroom Toddle (Grades 1-6), which is used to document student learning during each unit of inquiry throughout the year.
