The students discovered one of the most important players in one’s learning…the neuron. Students discussed and built upon their previous knowledge about the biomechanics of learning through the formulation of questions and the search for answers. Once having learnt about how neurons create pathways and pass messages through a game of Neuron-Chain, they were asked to draw what they believed a neuron looked like. Some students took it a step further and drew a representative picture of the neuron and its roles in transmitting messages throughout the body. It was during a period of iSTEAM that they were formally introduced to the anatomy of the neuron via the task of creatively creating pipe cleaner and playdough neurons. When the students came in the next morning to find their projects attached to the ceiling, they stated that their neurons were transmitting messages for the brain, which is the school.

Les élèves ont appris à propos des neurones, un des facteurs les plus importants dans l’apprentissage. À travers de la recherche indépendante et des discussions, ils se sont informés des rôles du neurone. En jouant le jeu, Chaîne de Neurones, ils ont appris comment les messages sont transmis. Certains ont aussi fait le lien qu’il y a des maladies, comme la SP, qui peut affecter la transmission des messages. Sans savoir l’apparence d’un neurone, les élèves ont dessiné leur idée d’un neurone. C’était durant une période d’iSTEAM qu’ils ont fait connaissance de son anatomie en fabriquant des neurones eux-mêmes.
